H. Lee Sweeney, Ph.D., is the William Maul Measey Professor and Chair of the Department of Physiology at Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Sweeney earned both a master’s degree in physiology and a doctorate in physiology and biophysics from Harvard University. He joined Penn’s medical faculty as an assistant professor in 1989, advancing to professor in 1998, and became department chairman in 1999. He is working to develop therapies for the skeletal and cardiac aspects of muscular dystrophies. Dr. Sweeney is involved in small molecule therapy development as well as evaluation of gene therapy approaches. Dr. Sweeney has published approximately 180 papers and reviews on topics including molecular motors of the myosin superfamily, skeletal muscle injury and disease, viral gene transfer into striated muscle, and cardiomyopathies.
