Chief Neuromuscular Diseases, Neurology Department
Professor Isabel ILLA is Chief of Neuromuscular Diseases at Hospital Santa Creu i Sant Pau (HSCSP), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona were she trained as a neurologist. After completing her PhD thesis on Myasthenia Gravis she worked as a neurologist with special interest in neuromuscular diseases at HSCSP. She was a visiting associate at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, NINDS, Neuromuscular Diseases Section from 1989 until 1992. In 2005 she was appointed Chair of Neurology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
Dr. Illa’s research is focused on the pathogenesis of muscular dystrophies, in particular dysferlin myopathies, and of immune mediated neuromuscular diseases. She founded and directs a research laboratory at HSCSP dedicated to the study of these disorders. She has a special interest in identifying novel biomarkers for these diseases, and in particular, mysashtenia gravis and CIDP. Her laboratory is also investigating the use of quantitative MRI in muscular dystrophies.
Together with Professor Jose Berciano, Director of CIBERNED (Centro Investigación Biomédica en Red Enfermedades Neurodegenerativas), Dr. Illa is responsible for establishing the Spanish National Neuromuscular Network of CIBERNED-NMD, of which she has been the coordinator since 2010.
