DMD Patient Advocate, UPPMD Board Member, EMA Patient Expert in DMD
Dimitrios Athanasiou has more than 25 years’ professional experience on international business projects, working in various countries consulting, financing and reorganizing companies. Since his son was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy 4 years ago, he became a fulltime international patient advocate in Duchenne and in rare diseases. Having a strong technocratic background he educated himself with basic rare disease and advocacy knowledge via the EURORDIS Summer School and then with the 14 month Patient Expert Course of the European Patients Academy of Therapeutic Innovation (EUPATI) acquiring solid biotech and regulatory knowledge.
He is currently a member of EURORDIS, a EUPATI Fellow, EUPATI’s Course Committee and established the Greek EUPATI National Liaison Team.
He is a nominated patient expert by EMA (European Medicines Agency) and has participated in several EMA Scientific Advice and SAG meetings for Duchenne. He is also an EMA’s reviewer for European public assessment report (EPAR) summaries, Package leaflets (PL), Safety communications and Public summaries.
Currently he is a Board Member of United Parent Projects Muscular Dystrophy (UPPMD) the global umbrella organizations for Duchenne, Co-Chairs EFGCP’s Children’s Medicine Working Party (CMWP) and is DIA’s EuroMeeting 2017 Program Committee Member.
Nationally in Greece he established the Parent Project of MDA HELLAS and deals with improving the SoC and access in the country. Internationally he is a strong advocate for DMD with regulators, EU authorities, academia and industry. Dimitrios is helping the establishment of a vibrant global network of patient organizations where children will have the best care and where new, safe and accessible drugs are available for DMD and rare diseases.
